Original question: Is it possible to drape a polygon over a DEM or DRG so that it is shaded but transparent (the bottom image can still be seen through the polygon)? I can add the carto.avp to create hatches that are transparent, but am having trouble creating a transparent solid fill polygon. I have AV 3.1 and AV 8.1. Thanks for your help. Thanks to: Kathi Hannaford, Robert Chao, Bob Plummer, Wim van Den Bosse, Damian Sangrud, and alaudensack@t-online.de , Neal Banerjee, and Sara Arscott for their responses. This can easily be done in ArcView 8.1 using the transparency option under Layer/Properties/Display and setting the percentage of desired transparency. This can be done in ArcView 3.x with hatch or dot fills using the carto palette. There doesn't seem to be any easy way to do this with a solid fill. A suggestion from John Amoroso: If you have Spatial Analyst, create a raster version of the polygons shapefile and then shade it using your DEM/DRG as the brightness theme(click the Advanced Button).
